Shell Shockers Aim to Move into Play-off Place This Weekend
June 2, 2006
The New Orleans Shell Shockers could move up to second place in the league with a win against the DFW Tornados at Muss Bertolino Stadium in Kenner at 730pm on Saturday.
Despite losing their first four games, the Mid South Division is currently so close that a victory may see the Shell Shockers jump three places into second place. The Laredo Heat top the table with five wins out of five, but the other four teams in the league are separated by just three points.
Head Coach Kenny Farrell said Friday: “This division is wide open and everything is up for grabs. All the teams are beating each other, and we have already got the difficult trip to last year’s national runners-up El Paso out of the way.
“We had a slow start to the campaign and I put that down to post-Katrina problems. We should have had more pre-season games but we were scrambling just to get a steady training ground and trying to locate players.
“Now the team is more cohesive, the guys are starting to better understand their roles and after a great week of training I expect us to win on Saturday.”
The Shell Shockers are looking to build on their first win of the season, an impressive 3-1 victory against the Austin Lightning last Wednesday (NOTE: MAY 27) which was the first competitive match the club has ever played in Kenner. Next weekend they travel to Texas for meetings with the DFW Tornados and the Austin Lightning, before returning to Kenner for a fixture against the Nashville Metros on Saturday June 17.
Meanwhile defender Nick Lambert has been rewarded for his outstanding display in the last home game. The United States Leagues has picked him for their illustrious Team of the Week, highlighting the best performances by players from all 59 Premier Development League squads across the country.
Farrell said: “Nick has been improving and refining his game and fully deserves this recognition. Hopefully the rest of the side can step up and reach a similar level of performance.”
