Sparks flew and whistles blew in front of a large home crowd as the New
Orleans Shell Shockers defeated their local rivals the Baton Rouge
Capitals by a score of 3-0.
The Shockers (1-1-2) wasted no time in the first half, posting two goals
on the scoreboard in the first seven minutes of play. Shell Shocker Gino
Ray was able to capitalize on an unlucky deflection from a Baton Rouge
(0-3-0) defender, finding the net in the second minute. Just five minutes
later Shocker’s defender Ged Quinn found the back of the net with a
diving header from Jamie Davies’ cross. Neither team found the net in the
remainder of the first half.
The second half of the game saw more physical play as members from both
teams were booked in the first ten minutes. Moments after Baton Rouge’s
Jarrett Gautreau was shown a yellow card in the 51st minute, Shocker’s
Nick Lambert was also booked. A second yellow card in the 61st minute
would be the end of the night for Lambert.
A reinvigorated Baton Rouge kept Shell Shocker’s goalkeeper Dustyn Brim
busy, totaling 19 shots for the match. Brim posted 12 saves and his second
straight shut-out in two nights. The Shell Shockers closed out the game by
posting another goal on the board when Sparky Hughes found the back of the
net with a diving header seconds before the final whistle. Ged Quinn was
credited with the assist.
The Shell Shockers will return home on June 1st when they host Mississippi
Brilla FC. The two teams met back on May 5th, which ended in a 1-1 tie.
