Shell Shockers Hope To Beat The Heat This Saturday

June 7, 2007

New Orleans, LA (June 7, 2007) The Shell Shockers will travel to Laredo this weekend to take on the top-ranked Laredo Heat (4-1-3) in a Mid-South Division showdown. Saturday’s game will not be the first match between the teams as both teams fought to a 0-0 draw in New Orleans less than a month ago.

Having not suffered a loss in the three games since the Laredo-New Orleans match-up in May, the Shell Shockers (2-1-3) are looking forward to a re-match. In the two years and seven matches the Shell Shockers have played against Laredo since 2005, they have only defeated the Heat once back in May of 2005.

Despite the lackluster record against the Heat, Shell Shocker General Manager Amanda Miller is optimistic about the team’s chances against Laredo.

“We feel we match up very well against Laredo this year and are looking forward to playing this game,” commented Miller. “Our players are becoming more comfortable with each other and that is showing in their play on the field.”

In what will be the first of three straight road-games, the match will kickoff at 8:05PM CT at the UISD Student Activity Center in Laredo. Next Sunday, June 17th will find the Shockers returning to Texas to take on the DFW Tornados. The Shockers will then switch directions, traveling east to take on the Mississippi Brilla on Wednesday June 20. The Shell Shockers host their next home game on Wednesday, June 27th against the Baton Rouge Capitals in the third game of the “Battle of the Bayou.”

Players to Watch:
Shell Shocker midfielder Jamie Davies was named to the PDL Team of the Week for his performance in last Friday’s game, in which he posted an assist and the game-winning goal. Fellow Brit Ged Quinn was named to the Team of the Week just two weeks prior. These two players have hooked up twice already this season off of free kicks.

Quinn will have to be quick to mark Laredo’s Dionisio Infante, who is tied for the team lead in goals (with three) and in fouls (with 11). Infante, fast and agile, has proven problematic for the defense of many Mid-South PDL teams. Shell Shocker goalkeeper Dustyn Brim has seen him before, and hasn’t allowed Infante’s shots to cross his goal line.
