Shell Shockers Seek Win in ‘Battle of the Bayou’ Match
Monday, June 25, 2007
After suffering two losses and posting a tie in their third straight road game, the New Orleans Shell
Shockers (2-3-4) return home this Wednesday, June 27th, to battle the Baton Rouge Capitals (3-5-2) for possession of the inaugural Louisiana
Cup. The match kicks off a grueling week for the Shell Shockers; a run that will see the team playing three games in five days.
Though the Shell Shockers trail the Baton Rouge Capitals in the Mid-South PDL standings, they lead the Capitals in the ‘Battle of the Bayou’
standings. The ‘Battle of the Bayou’, a points-based competition, grants the team garnering the most points in head-to-head play the Louisiana Cup
as well as bragging rights for the season. Currently the Shell Shockers have four points to the Capitals one, meaning a win for New Orleans
secures them “Battle of the Bayou” bragging rights.
Despite their recent struggle to find an effective offensive attack, the Shell Shockers are optimistic about their chances for a win on Wednesday.
In their last two matches against the Capitals, the Shell Shockers have posted one win and one tie, denying the Capitals a goal in either match.
“We had a bye weekend at a perfect time to recharge our batteries,” commented Shell Shockers General Manager Amanda Miller. “The players
realize how important these three games are and they are ready to go out, get some wins, and start moving up the table.”
Players to Watch:
New Orleans Shell Shockers
Charismatic and quick, the lanky British defender, Stuart Hayers is a man to watch in Wednesday’s game. A crowd favorite on and off the field, Hayers is one of only two players (the other being goalkeeper Dustyn Brim) who has played every minute of every match since the Shell Shockers began their campaign this year. Should Head Coach Kenny Farrell shuffle his starting line-up again this week, look to the lefty to create scoring opportunities in the midfield.
Baton Rouge Capitals
The last time the Capitals visited the Shell Shockers on their home turf, Baton Rouge forward Anthony Judice proved to be a force in the Capitals’ attack. So far this season, Judice has posted two goals and one assist.
Wednesday’s match kicks off at 7:30 PM at Muss Bertolino Stadium in Kenner. The Shell Shockers will return to play just two short days later when they host the Mississippi Brilla on Friday, June 29 also at 7:30 PM. New Orleans rounds out their busy weekend with a game at Olympia Stadium in Baton Rouge on Sunday, July 1st.
