Despite the heat, a record-breaking crowd turned out to Robert P. Longabaugh Field to watch the Mississippi Brilla tie the New Orleans Shell Shockers in a scoreless match.

In hopes of creating a strong offensive attack, Shell Shocker head coach Kenny Farrell shuffled his starting lineup. Defender Stuart Hayers moved up to midfield, creating opportunities for midfielder Steven Medlock who adjusted to his new role as a striker.

The first half of the match proved to be very physical, with both teams posting almost as many fouls as shots. Action intensified in the 23rd minute when defender Luke Tyburski hustled to clear a dangerous ball off of the Shell Shocker goal line.

After a shower of shots in Shell Shocker territory, goalkeeper Dustyn Brim was forced to leave his line. When Mississippi’s James Gledhill broke through the defense, defender Ged Quinn fell back, knocking Gledhill’s ball out of contention. During the heated action, Shell Shocker Gannon Webb was shown the only card of the match.

Just minutes later Quinn moved up to midfield, sending a lovely cross to Steven Medlock whose shot went just wide.

The second half of the match proved as unsatisfying as the first, as both teams struggled to score. It seemed as if the Shell Shockers were going to post the only goal of the match when Quinn broke through the Mississippi defense, nearly finding the Mississippi net with his well-placed shot.

In the final minutes of the match, defender Nick Lambert’s diving header denies Mississippi’s chance for a goal. The match ends scoreless.

The Shell Shockers will return to action next Wednesday, June 27 when they host the Baton Rouge Capitals in a ‘Battle of the Bayou’ match. A win would assure the Shockers possession of the inaugural Louisiana Cup.
