Shell Shockers Hope to Break Losing Streak in Mississippi
June 19, 2007
After suffering their second loss in two weeks, the Shell Shockers (2-3-3) hope to break their two-game losing streak with a win against the Mississippi Brilla FC (3-3-2) in a match in Clinton, Mississippi tomorrow.
Before the team can relax and prepare for their upcoming home games (the team will play five of their next six games on home turf) they must find a way to stretch their road weary legs in Wednesday’s match. Having played the Brilla twice before, tying them in May (1-1) and defeating them in June (3-2), the Shell Shockers are optimistic about their chances tomorrow.
Shell Shocker General Manager Amanda Miller believes that tomorrow’s game will provide the team with an opportunity to get out of their road-induced funk.
“The last two matches have left a bad taste in our mouths and the players and coaches know that a win tomorrow night is essential to our quest for the playoffs,” said Miller. “We play in an extremely tough division but to show the caliber of team we are, we need to win on the road. Tomorrow night is our opportunity to show what we are made of.”
Players to watch:
Although he has played at least 100 minutes less than his fellow teammates and leading goal-scorers; Shell Shocker Sparky Hughes has posted as many goals (2) as Kee, Quinn, and Ray. Often a late sub, Hughes makes the most of his time on the field; scoring most recently in Sunday’s disappointing loss in Dallas.
The Shell Shocker defense will need to be quick to track Mississippi’s James “Gleddy” Gledhill. The 6’ tall, two-time All American has already scored three goals this season and is credited with two assists.
Wednesday’s match kicks off at 5:00pm at Robert P. Longabaugh Stadium in Clinton, Mississippi. The Shell Shockers will return to Muss Bertolino’s turf next Wednesday, June 27th when they play the Baton Rouge Capitals in a ‘Battle of the Bayou’ match at 7:30pm. The Shockers hope to maintain their three-point lead, having already tied and defeated the Capitals in their last two match-ups. A win would assure the Shell Shockers possession of the inaugural Louisiana Cup.
