Shell Shockers Defeat Mississippi Brilla FC in Tension-filled Match

New Orleans, LA (June 1, 2007) The New Orleans Shell Shockers (2-1-2) took to the field on Friday, defeating the Mississippi Brilla 3-2 in what was perhaps the most physical match of the season. Hoping to post their third straight shutout, a feat the Shell Shockers have not accomplished since their first season in 2003, the team took the lead in the 15th minute when Ged Quinn found the back of the net off of Jamie Davies’s free kick. The Shockers posted their second goal of the night in the 45th minute when veteran PJ Kee capitalized on goalkeeper Dustyn Brim’s well-placed goal kick.

Just twelve minutes into the second half, Shell Shocker Jamie Davies posted the team’s third goal of the match. Five minutes later teammate Stephen Duncan received a yellow card; the third card for New Orleans, but not last card of the match. The second half saw more fouls, and more yellow cards as players from both teams were booked. Six Shell Shockers received yellow cards and two Brilla players were booked as well.

The last ten minutes of the match saw a reinvigorated Mississippi Brilla (1-3-2) as they pressured the Shell Shocker defense and goalkeeper Dustyn Brim. Brilla got off 14 shots in the second half, finding the net twice. Mississippi’s Micheal Brown scored in the 85th minute. It was only five minutes later when Brown’s teammate Keith Armstrong posted Brilla’s
second goal. It seemed as if the Shocker’s lead was to be eclipsed when the Shockers' box was flooded with blue Brilla jerseys. The tension escalated as goalkeeper Dustyn Brim and his defense scrambled to knock the ball out of danger. Mississippi continued to threaten the Shocker defense with a barrage of shots and it seemed as if the match would be ended in a decision when a Brilla shot nearly crossed the goal line only to be knocked out by Shell Shocker defender Oscar Gonzalez.

The tension ceased when the whistle blew, ending the match in the Shocker’s favor, 3-2.

The New Orleans Shell Shockers will take to the road on Sunday when they travel to play local rival the Baton Rouge Capitals at Olympia Stadium. The match will be the second game in the Battle of the Bayou series, in which both teams compete in head-to-head play for the Louisiana Cup. The game kicks off at 6PM.
