Shell Shockers Fall to Baton Rouge 2-1 in Deciding 'Battle of the Bayou' Match

Baton Rouge Capitals-2 (Lapira 9’, Reine 62’)

Stakes were high as the New Orleans Shell Shockers (3-4-5) took to field to play the Baton Rouge Capitals (4-6-3) in hopes of winning the Louisiana Cup. Despite leading the Capitals in ‘Battle of the Bayou’ standings (5-2), the Shell Shockers were unable to clinch the cup, falling to Baton Rouge 2-1.

First Half-

9th minute - GOAL Baton Rouge’s 4-2-4 attack proves problematic for the Shell Shockers when Herman Trophy winner Josh Lapira slips past the New Orleans defense to slide the ball past Shell Shockers Goalkeeper Fred Mince. The Capitals’ Tony Judice is credited with the assist.

11th minute - Baton Rouge threatens to score again when Lapira forces Mince into a one on one situation; Mince temporarily knocks the ball out of danger.

19th minute - It seemed like the Shell Shockers might even the score when Jamie Davies sends a lovely curving cross to Josh Couvillion whose shot is deflected by goalkeeper Scot Rosman.

27th minute - Baton Rouge is awarded a free kick 30 yards out when Shell Shocker Nick Lambert is shown a yellow card.

33rd minute -Shell Shocker defender Ged Quinn sprints to catch a rogue Baton Rouge forward, twice blocking shots and sending the ball safely out of contention.

34th minute - GOAL The Shell Shockers are awarded a corner kick which Jamie Davies sends into the box. Stuart Hayers lightly flicks ball on to Josh Couvillion to even score.

38th minute - Capitals’ Joey Belfour is issued yellow card.

Second Half-
62nd minute - after sending several shots into the Shell Shocker defense; Capitals’ Corey Maret sends the ball to BJ Reine who heads it into the net, giving the Capitals a 2-1 lead.

70th minute - The Shell Shockers are awarded a free kick when Baton Rouge’s Jarret Gautrau is booked.

71st minute - Capitals’ BJ Reine makes a run into Shell Shocker territory, cracking the crossbar with his shot.

73rd minute - Just minutes later, the referee takes Luke Tyburski’s number, booking him in the 73rd minute.

76th minute - PJ Kee wins the ball, sending it to teammate Nick Lambert whose shot goes just wide of the Capitals’ net.

77th minute - Just minutes later, Kee makes a lovely run into the box, before his shirt is grabbed, preventing him from getting off a shot.

The whistle blows, awarding Baton Rouge the win as well as possession of the Louisiana Cup.
