Shell Shockers' Player Offered Trial with Major League Soccer Club
August 15, 2006
Shell Shockers' player Nick Beasant flies to Boston on Tuesday to train with Major League Soccer club New England Revolution.
The 20-year-old English center-half has been invited for a week-long try-out with the side, who reached the MLS Cup final last season and currently sits second in the Eastern Conference.
An ever-present in defense since joining in June, he helped the Shell Shockers avoid defeat three times in the last seven games while prior to his arrival they had lost seven out of nine.
Beasant has experienced soccer at a high level as he trained as a schoolboy with current English Premier League champions Chelsea for nine years, and also played at English league teams Wycombe Wanderers, Barnet and Brentford.
Shell Shockers' Head Coach Kenny Farrell said: "Nick's superb talent and fantastic ability to read the game was a major asset for us this year. His experience meant we were able to cut out some of the defensive lapses which had cost us earlier in the season.
"His acquisition was undoubtedly one of the reasons why we finished the year much stronger than we had started it. I think he has the talent to step up to the next level, and the Shell Shockers wish him well for his trial with one of the leading soccer outfits in the country."
Beasant said: "I have really enjoyed my time with the Shell Shockers and living in New Orleans for two months has been a fabulous experience. I have grown to love the city and hope to come back soon.
"I've made a point of touring areas like the Lower Ninth Ward and seeing the destruction and devastation which the hurricane left behind. When you consider the beating the city suffered then it is amazing the Shell Shockers were able to play this year at all.
"I will always be grateful to both the club and the city for giving me my chance to play soccer in the States, and I am planning to come back at the end of the month to take part in some of the Katrina anniversary commemorations."
